One week, two separate home inspections one with a new roof and one with a recently patched roof. Thermal imaging spotted two roof leaks that may have gone unnoticed. Moisture leaks are displayed in blue shadows.
The first roof leak recently patched by “Chuck in the truck” as is evident in the photos included. What makes this different is my moisture meter did not pick up any moisture through the drywall. Once inside the attic space further review of the sheathing and the insulation confirmed there was in fact an active roof leak.

Thermal camera picks up moisture, not located near patch seen in kitchen.
Note patch new shingles, roofing tar on backside of roof sheathing.
FYI: roofing tar on the inside of the home does NOTHING.
Second home, newly installed roof, same problem, leaking. Thermal imaging showed an active moisture leak and as the photo shows you can see the heat from the drain waste pipe (in yellow) through the wall. IR shows a place to start looking for this possible moisture leak. As with the first roof leak my moisture meter did not pick up any moisture in the drywall.

Observed in attic space, wet insulation, drywall was dry at time of inspection.
Then there are those occasions when you find a water leak by surprise.
